Chancellor Merkel invites PM Mitsotakis to Berlin

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is to visit Berlin in late August, at the invitation of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, according to an announcement on Tuesday.

Merkel extended the invitation during a phone call to Mitsotakis on Tuesday morning to congratulate him on his victory in the elections.

Mitsotakis thanked her for the invitation, while the exact date of the visit - which will take place after the Greek parliament reconvenes on August 20 - is expected to be confirmed in the following days.

The new prime minister's first visit abroad will be to Cyprus, after the government presents its policy platform, over the three-day period July 20-22. The date of Mitsotakis' visit was confirmed on Monday during a telephone call with President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, who also congratulated him.
