Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Tuesday challenged main opposition New Democracy's President Kyriakos Mitsotakis to confront him in a televised debate, even if the other party leaders are unable to attend, in a post on social media. He pointed out that Mitsotakis had made a promise to hold a debate in parliament and would otherwise be going back on his word.
"Mr. Mitsotakis, the rest of the parties have stated that they are unable to attend the debate on July 1. You, however, promised in parliament on May 8, 2019 that you will come to a televised debate - as many as I wanted, in fact - once elections had been proclaimed. Do you so greatly undervalue your promises and your programme," Tsipras said.
He noted that there were now only 10 days left before the elections and called on Mitsotakis to "keep his word", ignoring the communications experts advising his campaign. "Let us discuss all the issues, openly and without fear, before the Greek people. Whenever you want, wherever you want. I will wait for your reply," Tsipras added.
