"There is no proposal from the European Commission for a border control mechanism. I do not consider that our country has a reason to proceed with the creation of any emergency mechanism," Migration and Asylum Minister Notis Mitarachi said on Wednesday in parliament, in reply to a question submitted by New Democracy MP Manousos Voloudakis.
"Our country, of course, guards its borders. Greece has land and sea borders. There are European mechanisms governing the protection and security of borders. And our country guards its borders with absolute respect for Greek, European and international law", Mitarachi said and stressed that the result of the overall government policy to reduce migration flows is a 90 percent reduction in flows in relation to 2019.
The Minister of Migration and Asylum also pointed out that Greece fully and unwaveringly complies with the provisions for the protection of fundamental rights "as part of the European acquis, as part of the Geneva Convention, as part of international agreements and treaties for the protection of human life at the sea."
