The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way we see the world. Lockdowns have affected billions of people, giving them the opportunity to question their priorities and challenge the status quo. And it’s strengthened our relationship with, and reliance on, technology. Never before has the world spent more time in front of screens.
One startup is riding these two trends with the aim of changing the way we use social media. My Angels, which describes itself as “The Good Network”, hopes to offer a positive experience and encourage users to spend time on more meaningful interactions rather than simply following the latest buzz. At the heart of this social media network, each user has his or her own guardian angel who acts as a messenger to communicate with other people or simply pass on prayers and wishes. “The angel is a symbol that crosses cultural and social boundaries,” explains Duncan Hooper, a spokesman for the company.
“Research shows that more than two-thirds of people, whether religious or not, believe that angels watch over them.” Rather than focusing around an algorithm of updates, like most social platforms, My Angels positions itself as a sanctuary from the pressure and chaos of daily life. Functions such as sending a candle or good thoughts to other users prioritize messages of support around key moments in the life of friends and family. Users can also post their wishes publicly and others can join with them to express support -whether they want to find a job or raise money for a good cause or just send good luck to a family member or friend facing a challenge. “It’s all about building a community of positivity and support,” adds Hooper.
My Angels have a tough job to break into a social media market that has already hooked in 4.5 billion people around the world. However, the changes brought by the pandemic have already redefined how we shop and entertain ourselves so the launch timing could not be better. https://myangels.com/
